Why Go: Experience the unique Texas German flavor visiting the Hauptstrasse (Main Street) which is full of boutiques, antiques, restaurants, bakeries and generation-old peach orchards. In the middle of the beautiful Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg boasts one of the largest viniculture areas in the US, with more than 10 wineries in the region.

What you can do: Fredericksburg has an abundance of boutiques and specialty shops lining its main streets. Visit Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, a massive dome of granite that is the root of Indian lore—ghost fires, human sacrifice and spirits create an atmosphere of awe. Rock climb, rappel and hike its rugged terrain. The area is perfect for stargazing.

Fredericksburg is in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. On route, you can visit the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site and the LBJ National Park. And do not forget to visit Texas Wine Country. This area produces the finest wine in the state.

Travel portion: After breakfast in Austin, take a leisurely drive through the Texas Hill Country on your way to Fredericksburg.  You can drive directly from Austin to Fredericksburg and back on US 290. Go West to Fredericksburg from Austin; East from Fredericksburg to Austin.  For a bit more scenic drive via Pedernales Falls State Park, Go US 290 West about 8.5 miles west from MoPac Expressway (TX-1 Loop), US 290/TX 71 Intersection. This is Fitzhugh Road (County Rd 101). Take a side trip into Pedernales Falls State Park (30 min to an hour), and then to Johnson City where you link back up with US 290 West. Past Johnson City, about 12 or 13 miles down the road is Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park where to can learn about President Johnson's heritage. Fredericksburg is about another 15 minutes away.  The scenic road back is a visit to Enchantment Rock, 30 minutes north on Ranch Rd 965. From Enchanted Rock State Park, Take Ranch Rd 965 South for about 4.25 miles to Lower Crabtree Rd left. Follow Lower Crabtree Road (3.25 miles) and then left on Eckert Road all the way to Eckert, TX. Right on TX-16 and a quick left on Farm Rd 1323. Stay on Farm Rd 1323 for about 30 miles until you reach US 281 which goes back to Johnson City. In Johnson City, US 281 joins US 290 East. Take US 290 East back to Austin.

Food options: Breakfast in Austin. Have lunch in Fredericksburg at (Rather Sweet Bakery or Rathskeller). After an afternoon strolling the shops and boutiques in Fredericksburg, you might want to have dinner at The Nest Restaurant or Fredericksburg Herb Farm Bed & Breakfast (Rock House Restaurant).
